2. Decide how much you want to spend per ticket.

Scratch tickets can range in price anywhere from a dollar to a hundred. And, generally speaking, as the price of the card increases, so does the potential prize you can earn.

To put it another way, if you buy a one dollar card, you could win, say, $5,000. But if you splurge on a $50 card your prize could be as much as a million dollars.

Check your card for the odds of winning, and determine how much money you’d like to spend. Weigh that against your potential earnings, but remember that winning isn’t guaranteed!

Here’s where it gets interesting. Let’s say you have five bucks to spend, but you’re not sure which card to buy. Head to the internet to find your local lottery site.

If you’re in the United States, your lottery will usually have its own website. In, for instance, the UK, there’s a National Lottery website. Wherever you are, find your local webpage. On that website you’ll see a list of the scratch cards available. Find a few in your price range and click for details.

Not only will you see the odds of winning that particular contest but you’ll also see how many people have already won. For example, if there are 100 prizes of $2 but 46 people have already won that prize, your odds will decrease.

4. Compare your odds of winning.

So, as we mentioned, you’ve got five bucks to spend, right? You can choose between two different tickets. But which one should you buy?

While you’re online, compare the odds of winning. Let’s say one ticket has already had 500 winners out of a possible 1,000. The other game has had just 300 winners out of 1,000.

You have better odds of winning with the second ticket, so you may choose to buy that one.

Talk to the store clerk and ask which cards win the most often. Then, buy a different card. If there’s a roll of cards that’s a frequent winner, there’s a good chance that roll has no more winners.

First, you could hang out at the store and wait for someone to lose on a scratch off ticket. That increases your odds that the next ticket is a winner.

Or, you could take a kinder approach and just buy several, consecutive tickets. Instead of buying one five dollar ticket, buy five one dollar tickets! The odds that you’ll buy a winner are greater that way.

If you have not won, you should still go back in the store. Have the clerk scan your ticket just to make sure. There are some scratch off cards that can be confusing and you don’t want to overlook any winnings! Some stores have a scanner right there at the counter. In a second chance lottery, you’ll have the opportunity to send in your “losing” scratch cards for a second chance to win those earnings that have been unclaimed. The prizes may be in the form of cash or even gifts and new cars. Your local lottery will tell you the odds when the lottery is announced.

However, it’s not usually smart to buy a second chance-eligible ticket on the off chance you might win a second chance lottery. The odds are more in favor of someone actually winning the “big prize” than on you winning the second chance lottery.

11. Sign up for an account with your local lottery online.

There’s little more annoying than having your drawer, your purse or your car cluttered with “losing” lottery tickets. As soon as you’re able, find out if you can just enter those lottery tickets into second chance drawings online.

Sign up for an account with your local lottery organization. Most places around the world that hold lotteries offer this opportunity. Some even have apps you can install on your cell phone or tablet!

Once you’re registered for an account, simply enter or scan your tickets to your account as soon as you purchase them. Then, in most cases, you can just toss your tickets in the trash. Check with your local rules, as in some jurisdictions you’ve got to be holding the winning ticket to claim your prize.

In addition to simply making your life easier, signing up for an online lottery account offers other opportunities to win. Some locations allow you to enter your tickets to earn points. Using those points, you can enter other contests in addition to the scratch off game!

Without getting too mathematical, let’s talk about odds of winning for a moment. Let’s say, just for argument’s sake, there’s a game for which a thousand tickets have been printed. You buy a hundred of those. You then have a 10% chance of winning the Big Prize.

Now, say there are four games, which have also had a thousand tickets printed. You buy 25 tickets from each game. Your odds have just been reduced to 2.5% chance that you’ll win any one of those games.

Consider choosing a scratch card game you think is fun and that is within your budget and stick with it. Each time you play the lottery, choose that card until you see that all the big prizes have been awarded. Doing so can dramatically increase your odds of winning on scratch cards.

In the beginning of this article, we imagined a scenario where dozens of winning tickets were hung up for all to see. Does that make it a lucky store? Is that where you should buy your scratch off?

Ask which cards were just released. For instance, you could say, “Hey, what’s the new five dollar card?” There are usually only one or two, and if they’re brand new your odds of winning are about the same for either one.

Secrets of State Lottery Scratch-off Contracts

When most people think of advantage gambling, state lottery scratch-offs are the last thing that enters their minds.

Everyone’s heard of counting cards at blackjack. There are even several moviesabout it.

And poker has been shown to be a game of skill; just look at the repeat winners of major tournaments like the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour.

But most people still refer to the lottery as an “idiot tax”.

And scratch offs have a notoriously bad expected value (which you can think of as a gambling game’s return on investment).

To give you an example of how bad lottery tickets can be, most $1 scratch offs have an expected value of around 60%, meaning for every $1 you spend, you’re expected to get back just $0.60; a $0.40 loss.

Most penny slots have paybacks that are better than that.

And other gambling games, like blackjack, can approach 99% payback without any card counting at all.

I’m here to shed light on a new way of thinking about scratch-offs and show you how you can improve your odds. It won’t always be profitable.

Where Are Scratch-off Grand Prizes?

Grand prizes are not random.

I’m sure all of these insights will come as a surprise.

But this one is probably the biggest.

Surely the state wants to ensure a fair game.

How can it be fair if the biggest prizes of all aren’t even random?

Here’s an image of the procurement document that the Massachusett’s lottery used to elicit bids from ticket printers:

You’ll see that they require the grand prizes to be distributed evenly throughout the game.

Note that “distributed evenly throughout the game” is not random.

If the prizes were random, then they might all appear at the start of the game. Or they might all appear at the end of a game.

But the state doesn’t want that to happen. If all of the grand prizes were claimed at the start of the game, then people would stop playing the game because they would have no shot at the big money.

You can take advantage of this fact by figuring out how many tickets are in a “pool” where a grand prize should be. If there are 9,000,000 tickets and 3 grand prizes, then divide 9,000,000 by 3 to figure out that there must be 1 grand prize every 3,000,000 tickets.

Then, use the state’s lottery website to figure out how many tickets remain. Most states publish this information for each game.

In the example game just mentioned, if there were 7,000,000 tickets remaining and still 3 remaining grand prizes, then you know the first grand prize must be in the next 1,000,000 tickets. Your odds just improved from 1 in 3,000,000 to 1 in 1,000,000.

That may not seem like much, but it can mean the difference between negative and positive expected value.

Is There A Limit To The Number Of Big Winning Tickets In A Roll?

Here’s an image from documents filed as part of a Texas lawsuit against the state and the ticket printer:

In this contract that Texas has with IGT, there’s a clause that states that there can be no more than a certain number of $25-$50 winners per pack of tickets. There’s another clause that states there can be no more than one winner of $75 and higher per pack. (The “one” is redacted, but we can deduce that tit’s one by looking at the word following the redaction, which is “winner” rather than “winners”).

How can you use this to your advantage?

Buy only one ticket from a pack at a time and scratch it right there at the store.

If it happens to be a big winner, don’t buy any more tickets from that pack.

What Is The Minimum Payback for a Roll of Scratch-off Tickets?

This next image is from the request for a proposal from the New Mexico lottery association to ticket printers:

It shows that each pack of tickets has some guaranteed payout. The details of the guaranteed payout aren’t specified, but from other contracts and personal experience, I’ve found it to typically be about 50% of the price of a pack of tickets. If an entire roll of tickets costs $600, then the GLEP is usually about $300.

What this means for the advantage player is that you should not stop buying after a string of losers.

Since each roll of tickets is guaranteed to have a certain minimum payout, then every loser you see increases the chance that the remaining tickets are winners.
